  10.                     OPERATING THE ICES SYSTEM

  14.                   INSTRUCTIONS TO THE STUDENTS
  15.  
  16.    You  will  need  to  provide  the following information to the
  17. students in order for them to use ICES.
  18.  
  19. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE ON A DUAL FLOPPY DRIVE SYSTEM
  20.  
  21.   1. Go to the 'lab' and check out a copy of the ICES DISK.
  22.   2. Insert the ICES DISK in Drive A of the computer.
  23.   3. Insert your data disk in Drive B of the computer.
  24.   4. Turn on the computer (if the computer is already on, reboot
  25.        it using the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys).

  27. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE ON A HARD DRIVE SYSTEM
  28.  
  29.   1. Turn on the computer (if the computer is already on, issue
  30.        the command, CD\ICES <cr>).
  31.   2. Insert your data disk in Drive A of the computer.
  32.   3. Issue the command, ICES <cr>.

  41. THE ICES.TXT FILE
  42.  
  43.   There  is  a very short text file on this diskette that has the 
  44. name, ICES.TXT.  You may wish to print and examine  it.   We  use
  45. this  file  as  a set of printed instructions to be handed out to 
  46. the students in the classroom.  Of course, you can  modify  these
  47. instructions to suit your own needs and working environment.

  52. FIRST THINGS FIRST!
  53.  
  54.   When  the  students  have ICES on screen for the first time, it 
  55. will ask  them  for  registration  information  that  the  system
  56. requires.  When they provide that information, ICES will register
  57. them into your course and then present the master menu.
  58.  
  59.   The first time they see the ICES Master Menu, they should press 
  60. the letter 'A' to obtain instructions.   They  should  study  the
  61. instructions most carefully before proceeding to any work for the
  62. course.
  63.  
  64.   If  they fail to study the ICES Instructions, they could easily 
  65. do work that will be lost.  Of course, the only consequence  will
  66. be  that  the work must be repreated.  But, they should learn how
  67. to use the system before attempting to use it.

  73. LIMITED ACCESS TO ICES FEATURES
  74.  
  75.   The  students  should  be told that they can use any feature of 
  76. ICES that is  displayed  on  the  master  menu  without  external
  77. assistance  --  EXCEPT  for taking a test or quiz.  They can call 
  78. for a test or quiz but they cannot gain access  to  any  of  them
  79. unless  the  instructor  or  authorized assistant first enters an
  80. INSTRUCTOR PASSWORD.  This protection feature is provided so that
  81. you can more carefully monitor the taking of tests and quizes.

  92. THAT'S IT! 
  93.  
  94.   There's  little more that the students need to know in order to
  95. make good and productive use of the entire ICES system.

  99.               GETTING THE DATA FROM THE STUDENTS 
  100.  
  101.   Once the students have begun to use the ICES system  for  their
  102. work,  you  will need to obtain their data so that the system can 
  103. do the rest of its work for you.  When doing that,  we  recommend
  104. that you use the following procedures.
  105.  
  106.   1. Collect the student diskettes once every three weeks.
  107.        (Announce your intention to do this one class period in
  108.         advance so that all students will bring their diskettes
  109.         to class.)
  110.   2. Copy your '.TCH' files onto your BACKUP MASTER FILE DISK. 
  111.   3. Call up the teacher program and choose the 'Collect Student
  112.        Data' option.
  113.   4. Update your master file.
  114.  
  115.   When  you've  carried  out the above procedures, you can easily 
  116. review each student's performance or  prepare  an  interim  grade
  117. report for your files.

  124. SAVING ICES SYSTEM FILES
  125.  
  126.   In addition to the student records that will be maintained in
  127. your master file, the process of initializing ICES is one that
  128. generates a number of other important files that you will want to
  129. preserve. 
  130.  
  131.   Virtually  all  of the files that represent your setup work for 
  132. ICES have one of two file name extensions.   They  are  .INS  and
  133. .TCH.   All  such  files are created by and stored on the PROFESS
  134. disk or directory.

  141.   Once you have completed the setup work for  ICES  we  recommend
  142. that  you  copy  your  ICES  system  files  onto your master file 
  143. diskette.  If you are using a dual floppy  system,  for  example,
  144. you  can  preserve  all of your essential system files by putting 
  145. your working copy of the PROFESS DISK in Drive A and your  MASTER
  146. FILE DISK in Drive B.  Then issue the commands
  147.

  154. BACKUP YOUR RECORDS!   
  155.  
  156.   We STRONGLY URGE that you format a blank diskette and label  it
  157. as your BACKUP master file disk.  If you have labeled your master
  158. file diskette as

  176.   Any time you plan to collect data from the student diskettes or
  177. otherwise modify your records, you should FIRST backup your files
  178. by  copying  them  onto your BACKUP MASTER FILE DISK.  To do that 
  179. with a dual floppy drive system, for example, place  your  master
  180. file disk in Drive A and your BACKUP master file disk in Drive B.
  181. Then issue the command,
  182.  
  183.      COPY A:*.* B: <cr>
  184.  
  185.   If you do not employ this protection, you could come to  regret
  186. it.   The  last  thing  you  want on your hands is a mob of angry 
  187. students who've learned  that  most  of  a  semester's  quiz  and
  188. examination grades have been lost or destroyed!

  195.                   UPDATE YOUR MASTER FILE EARLY
  196.  
  197.   We do recommend that you update your student master file early.
  198. One  way to do that is to tell the students that you want them to 
  199. immediately take the 'Diagnostic Test' on  ICES  and  then  bring
  200. their  diskettes  back to you during the next class session.  You 
  201. can then collect the student diskettes  and  update  your  master
  202. file  by  choosing  the  'Collect  Student  Data'  option in this 
  203. program.  By doing that you will have your entire class files  in
  204. good  order  at  the  earliest  possible  moment.   This  is  not
  205. essential but it is a good practice.
